Advance in Responsibility in Moving to New Company

Case # 1:

Client had resigned his executive-level position because of internal conflicts of interest. When in discussion with his adviser he learned of consulting opportunities as a “stop loss” tactic (find temporary job while working on the grander strategy.) The client found an interesting consulting opportunity where he could use his Lean manufacturing and Six Sigma knowledge and skills to assist a company in lowering its manufacturing costs. He made significant contributions to his client company. In a one-on-one meeting his direct client, the CEO, told him that he would love to have him work full-time but didn’t know where he could put him.

When the adviser and the client discussed that comment the adviser suggested a business proposal direct to the CEO. (The company not only wanted to reduce its operating and manufacturing costs, it was struggling with the integration of four companies it had acquired over the last five years.) There was no COO in the organization. The adviser suggested that he approach the CEO with a proposal of his becoming the company’s Chief Process Officer to oversee completion of the Lean Six technologies and systems as well as oversee the completion of successful integration of the other companies. A step from there could be to COO. After the CEO read the letter, he met with the client to discuss his thoughts. Within two weeks the CEO offered the client the COO position.
