Interviewing
Successful Interviewing
“In the confrontation between the stream and the rock, the stream always wins—–not through strength, but through perseverance.” – H. Jackson brown
Successful interviews are those in which you reach mutual agreement between yourself and the interviewer that you can bring them value by helping them to achieve their goals and objectives. Most people fail in an interview because they enter the interview situation thinking it’s “them” and “me.” In reality, the decision maker is looking to answer two questions: 1) “Can this candidate do this job?” and 2) “Do we want this candidate to do this job?” Additionally, the candidate is looking to answer two questions: 1) “Can I do this job?” and 2) “Do I want to do this job?”
If you do not demonstrate your value, you may miss out on a mutually beneficial employment relationship. When you understand yourself through self-assessment, understand the company through research and networking, and write effective correspondence, you generate interest, which leads to an ‘interview.’ There are many techniques that you can use to ‘level the playing field’ in an interview. Converting an interview into a “business meeting’” that surfaces the company’s, and the hiring decision maker’s needs, establishes your value and lays the groundwork for a mutually beneficial relationship. Even if there is no “match,” you can use the opportunity to expand your networking… when you make a good impression, you always benefit.
The interview is where the rubber hits the road. If you do not have a strategy going in, then your chances for success are not high.
